“The Bolcom piece is in a whole different world. I have enjoyed this composer’s pieces and his wonderful piano skills for nearly 50 years. There is something inherently American about his compositions, and his discography helped to define the great music and songs in American popular repertoire of the 1900s. The Serpent’s Kiss began its life as a movement of a piano solo suite called `The Garden of Eden’, a ragtime telling of the biblical story. Later Bolcom arranged it for two pianos. He asks not only for complex rhythmic accuracy, but extrapiano effects from the performers. Yes, you can hear foot stomping and knuckles rapping on the wood of the piano case, and even some well-timed tongue clicking. It only stands to reason that a work for solo piano, arranged by the composer for two pianos should take some effort to arrange as a piano duet. The duo performs their own arrangement, and it is quite effective and a great closing work for this recital.
